On 26 December 2016, the Association of Muezzins Saïd Bilal du Burkina organized a nationwide day of fasting, ending with prayers in all 45 provinces, following the 16 December attack on Burkinabè soldiers in Nassoumbou. Its founder and president, Cheik Mahamadi Dera, condemned terrorism, stressed that the Quran does not authorize violence, and called on Burkinabè of all religions to unite. He also advocated educating children and strengthening joking kinship as ways to combat the scourge.
