From 13 to 15 May 2019, a SWEDD awareness caravan against child marriage visited Faramana, Bama, Léna and Koti. In Koti, Myriam Gao, 15, and Sali Gao, 17, reported being held for about two weeks by two brothers who intended to marry them. The departmental service recorded more than 50 abductions for marriage in 2018. In Faramana, religious leaders and community representatives pledged to verify girls’ ages and cancel any marriage involving someone under the legal age of 18.
